Women's Basketball Runs Past Rowan

Montclair, NJ (12/10/05) – Junior forward STEPHANIE MACHIN scored 24 points and pulled down six rebounds in 19 minutes of action as Montclair State won its third straight with a 72-52 victory over Rowan University in New Jersey Athletic Conference Women's Basketball action at Panzer Gymnasium on Saturday.

JESSICA GARRABRANT added 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals as the Red Hawks improved to 5-3 overall, 4-1 in the NJAC with their third victory over the Profs in the last four meetings. Ashley Cieplicki had 15 points for Rowan (2-6, 1-4 NJAC), which has dropped four straight. Montclair State jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game, but Rowan would make the score 19-14 as Cieplicki hit a short jumper with 7:55 to play.

The Red Hawks then exploded with a 12-0 run over the next three-plus minutes to build a 16-point advantage. Five different players scored in the run with Garrabrant scoring four points, including the final two on a layup to put Montclair State in front, 31-14. Machin would finish with 17 first-half points as MSU took a 37-20 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Red Hawks continued on their roll, opening the half with a 13-2 run to take a 50-22 lead with 16:20 to play. Machin had five points and MARIANNE MCGOVERN added four before Garrabrant capped off the burst again with a layup. AMY BONK scored on a layup to give Montclair State its largest lead at 70-40 with 2:23 remaining.

AMANDA MELO had a career-high 10 points off the bench for Montclair State, which held a 47-43 advantage on the boards. MICHELLE MADEJ had eight points while McGovern had six and three assists in 16 minutes of action. Machin registered three steals.

Lauren Byrne had six points and a game-high 15 rebounds for the Profs, who shot just 29 percent (8-of-27) in the first half and finshed the game at 32 percent (20-of-61). Sheemea Carr had eight points.

The Red Hawks return to action on Monday, December 12 as they travel to Farmingdale State for a 7:00 pm non-conference matchup.
