Machin, Garrabrant Lead Women's Hoops in Win

Montclair, NJ (12/7/05) – Junior forward STEPHANIE MACHIN posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while sophomore guard JESSICA GARRABRANT had one of her own with 15 points and 12 caroms as Montclair State posted its second straight win with a 74-59 victory over Ramapo College in NJAC Women's Basketball action at Panzer Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

JESSICA HORAN had 10 points and five assists off the bench for the Red Hawks, who improved to 4-3 overall, 3-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Keona Palmer had a game-high 17 points for Ramapo, which fell to 3-4, 1-3 in the conference.

The teams played a back-and-forth contest through the first 17 minutes before MSU pulled away in the final three with a 13-3 run. Tied at 25-25 with 3:11 to play, FERIN CATLETT scored on a layup and Machin followed with four points to put the Red Hawks up, 31-25. Palmer converted a three-point play to cut the lead back to three, however, Catlett countered with another layup and MARIANNE MCGOVERN finished off a fast break as Montclair took a 35-28 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Red Hawks quickly extended the lead with a 13-2 run. Machin opened the spurt with a jumper and Garrabtant scored six straight points before Catlett hit a layup for a 45-30 lead with 14:54 left. Horan then drained a three-pointer from the left side to cap the run. Horan would give Montclair State is largest lead of the game at 22 points, sinking another three-pointer with 3:47 to go as MSU led 69-47.

Catlett finished with nine points while McGovern added seven and MICHELLE MADEJ registered six and five assists. Horan added four steals as MSU shot 50 percent (16-of-32) in the second half and finished 33-of-73 from the floor. The Red Hawks also outrebounded the Roadrunners, 45-37, including 21 offensive boards.

Khiada Evans had 10 points for Ramapo, which shot just 34 percent (20-of-59) for the game. Erica Maclin had nine points off the bench while Alison Beller recorded eight points and eight rebounds.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, December 10 as they host the Profs of Rowan University at 3:00 pm.
