Montclair, NJ (2/12/05) - Sophomore guard Jenna Shenk connected on a three-point field goal to tie the game with 1:05 remaining, and then hit another three-pointer with 28 seconds left to put visiting Richard Stockton College ahead for good in a 47-42 NCAA Division III women's basketball victory at Montclair State.
The Ospreys thus swept the two-game season series with MSU to improve to 14-9 overall and 9-5 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while the host Red Hawks slip to 12-9 on the year and 7-7 in conference play. The victory was also the 200th of his career for Stockton head coach Joe Fussner, making him 200-136 overall in 13 seasons with the Ospreys.
MSU sophomore forward
STEPHANIE MACHIN led all players with 17 points, while freshman guard
JESSICA GARRABRANT led the Red Hawks with 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Jessica Rainey topped Stockton with 11 points, five steals and three blocks, while Shenk finished with 10 points (all in the second half). RSC junior forward Krystle Umscheid paced all players with 17 rebounds. Montclair State, which shot just 18 percent from the field in the first half, battled back from a 21-11 halftime deficit to take a 33-28 lead with 9:41 remaining in regulation.
The two squads the traded baskets down the stretch as Machin put the Red Hawks ahead, 41-38, on a lay-up with 1:22 left, only to set the stage for Shenk's heroics and a 44-41 RSC lead with 28 seconds left. Shenk then sank two free throws with seven seconds left to seal the win.
The Ospreys went 12-for-17 from the free throw line as a team in the final 20 minutes of play, after not attempting a free throw in the entire first half.
Montclair now plays at Hunter (NY) College on Monday night in non-conference action, while Stockton hosts NJAC rival Rowan University next Wednesday in Pomona, NJ.
