Fort Myers, FL (3/15/05) - The Montclair State softball team remained unbeaten as the Red Hawks swept another pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic held at Lee County Parks on Tuesday morning. MSU, now 6-0, blanked Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 2-0 in the first game before coming back with a 10-4 win over Cazenovia.
ATHANASIA TOTARO tossed her second shutout and improved to 3-0 as she scattered seven hits in the win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh (1-2). Totaro walked two and struck out five while also going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Totaro led off the first inning with a double and after
NICOLE PACICCO was hit by a pitch,
JACKIE FERRANTI singled to load the bases. Senior
MEGAN SWEENEY then collected an infield single, scoring Totaro with the only run Montclair State would eventually need. The Red Hawks then added an insurance run in the third as Crystal Dahlhaus smacked an RBI single, scoring
KARI MCDONNELL.
Against Cazenovia (2-3-1), MSU found itself down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first. However, Montclair didn't let the score stay that way as the Red Hawks plated six runs. Ferranti had a two-run double and
MEGAN TANTUM drove in a run with a fielder's choice to put Montclair in front., 3-2.
JOELLE FATA capped the inning with a bases-loaded three-run double for a 6-2 MSU lead.
Montclair added two more in the third as Pacicco stroked an RBI triple and McDonnell followed with a run-scoring base hit to make the score, 8-2. After Cazenovia got a run back in the sixth, Pacicco collected an RBI single in the fifth.
CHERYL BODAK accounted for the final MSU run as she had an RBI double in the sixth inning, scoring Sweeney.
DANA WARNOCK picked up the win. Warnock (3-0) went the first four innings allowing three runs and four hits, striking out one and walking one.
WHITNEY DRIVER went the final three innings giving up one run and two hits. Driver walked three and fanned two. Pacicco was 3-for-3 while Ferranti, Sweeny and Fata each had two hits for MSU.
The Red Hawks return to action in the Gene Cucic Classic on Wednesday, March 16 as they face No. 7 Wheaton (MA) in a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
