Salisbury Wins Slugfest with Montclair State, 15-13

Salisbury, MD – The Montclair State baseball team dropped its second straight game on Sunday as the Red Hawks were outslugged by Salisbury University, 15-13 at Sea Gull Field.

MIKE HALLIGAN, BRIAN BUTLER, ROB BLACKBURN and MARC DECASTRO each drove in two runs for the Red Hawks (0-2). Freshman ED KLOEPPING belted a pinch-hit home run.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, Montclair put eight runs on the board. JAMES SCELZO plated the first with a fielder's choice with DeCastro adding one on a single before Halligan's two-run double pushed the lead to 4-1. Butler had a run-scoring hit and Blackburn got an RBI on a fielder's choice with Boyd scampering home on a passed ball. A TOMMY WARTH RBI single closed out the inning for the Red Hawks, who led 8-1.

The Sea Gulls (9-1-1) got single runs in the second and third before tying the game with a five-run fourth inning. Blackburn's sac fly in the sixth regained the lead for Montclair however that was answered in the bottom of the inning for a 9-9 deadlock.

Kloepping's home run in the seventh gave MSU the lead for a third time with DANNY RODRIGUEZ and Butler each adding RBIs for a 12-9 advantage. The Sea Gulls plated two in the bottom of the inning to get within one, and after allowing a run in the top of the eighth, scored four times in the bottom half to take the lead.

Righthander ALEX THOMPSON, one of six Red Hawk pitchers to appear, took the loss. Halligan and Butler accounted for six of Montclair's 12 hits in the game with three apiece.

Montclair State is now off until Saturday, March 12 when it heads to Florida for the Clearwater Invitational. The Red Hawks will take on Rhode Island College in the first of six contests in the Sunshine State.
