Little Falls, NJ - Junior centerfielder Kevin Wright belted a two-run homer to back the complete-game performance by Mike Battista as Kean University posted its ninth straight win with a 9-3 victory over Montclair State in New Jersey Athletic Conference Baseball action at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday afternoon.
ROB BLACKBURN was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Montclair State (5-6, 1-1 NJAC), which had its two-game winning streak snapped.
Montclair State took a 2-0 lead after three innings as Blackburn doubled home a run in the second and
TOMMY WARTH lofted a sacrifice fly in the third. But Battista settled down and got stronger, limiting MSU to just one hit over the next three innings. Meanwhile Wright tied the game in the fourth as he smacked a two-run homer off Red Hawk starter
JAIRO MENDEZ.It was Wright's eighth homer of the season.
The Cougars then took the lead in the sixth with three runs. Urena led off the inning with a single and after Kean loaded the bases, David Adamo delivered a run with a fielder's choice. Aaron Richard would score on an error for a 5-2 Kean advantage and Schtazow lined a single to right,scoring Adamo with the final run.
The Red Hawks would threaten in their half of the seventh as pinch-hitter
ED KLOEPPING stroked a one-out RBI single pulling MSU within5-3 and putting runners at the corners. But Battista escaped further damage inducing an inning-ending double-play.
Kean then extended the lead to 8-3in the eighth with three runs as Schatzow drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Urena had an RBI single.
Battista improved to 5-0 as he allowed eight hits and the three Montclair runs. The righthander struck out six and walked just one in his 117-pitch performance. Mendez(2-3) took the loss surrendering five runs (four earned) and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three.
Urena, Wright, Schatzow and Joe D'Andrea each had two hits for Kean.
ETHAN BOYD and
MATT BENEDETTI had two hits apiece for MSU.
