Women's Lacrosse Clipped by Stevens

Montclair, NJ (4/13/05) - Senior midfielder Valerie Barnhart tallied six goals and an assist to lead No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology to a 14-13 victory over Montclair State University in NCAA Division III women's lacrosse action tonight at Sprague Field.

The Ducks improve to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the Knickerbocker Women's' Lacrosse Conference, while the Red Hawks fall to 7-3 on the year and 1-1 in league play. The loss, which ended a five-game MSU winning streak, was the first for the Red Hawks since a 13-10 setback to Dickinson (PA) College on March 17 in Florida.

Sophomore attack BRIANNA GILLIN tallied five goals and two assists for Montclair State and classmate SHAUNA BROCKLEBANK collected four goals and an assist to lead the Red Hawks offensively, while sophomore midfielder NICOLE LAROCCA scored three goals and sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Kuhmann made 15 saves in the MSU net.

The teams traded goals over the first 30 minutes with neither school able to lead by more than two goals as Montclair State took an 8-7 halftime lead. Stevens then tied the game on the first of two goals on the night by junior Melissa Scott, before Montclair reeled off three goals in a span of 2 minutes, 15 seconds for an 11-8 advantage, two by Brocklebank around one by Gillin. The Ducks then scored five consecutive goals to take the lead for good, including three unassisted tallies by Barnhart in a span of 2:45, for a 13-11 advantage.

LaRocca brought MSU within 13-12 with her third goal of the game with 2:58 remaining, before Scott put home the eventual game-winner at 58:27 to offset Gillin's goal with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. Freshman netminder Stephanie Linder made seven saves for the Ducks, who outshot the Red Hawks, 32-26.

MSU returns to KWLC action on Saturday at Kean University in Union at 1:00 p.m., while Stevens hosts conference foe Manhattanville College that day in Hoboken at noon.
