Montclair, NJ – Senior outfielder Paul Winterling belted a homer and drove in three runs as No. 23 Johns Hopkins pounded 17 hits in a 20-8 victory over Montclair State at Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Gary Rosenberg also homered and added two RBI as the Blue Jays (24-6) won their fifth straight and defeated the Red Hawks (11-19) for just the fifth time in 16 games.
JOHN JEDINY was 2-for-3 with two RBI off the bench for Montclair State.
After a scoreless first inning, JHU exploded for six runs. Dave Montegari started things off with an RBI single and Rob Sanzillo brought home a run with a ground out for a 2-0 lead. Ian Christie collected a run scoring single and Paul Long doubled to left to give the Blue Jays a four-run lead. Rosenberg then capped off the inning with a two-run homer just inside the left field foul pole, his eighth of the season.
Mike Drugala scored on a wild pitch in the third to make the score, 7-0 and Hopkins added four in the fourth to take a commanding 11-0 advantage. Eric Nigro delivered a run on a fielder's choice and Drugala lofted a sacrifice fly. Winterling then launched a two-run homer run, his sixth to complete the inning.
Ryan McConnell picked up the win with two innings of relief allowing two hits and a run with one strikeout. Montclair's
JAY COOK suffered the loss as he allowed the six runs in the second inning.
Cory Gleason was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for Johns Hopkins while Mike Spiciarich went 3-for-4 at the plate.
MATT BENEDETTI and Greg D'Alessandro each had two hits for Montclair State, which scored five times in the ninth.
ROB BOWNESS and Jediny each had RBI in the inning.
The Red Hawks return to action on Thusday, April 28 as they host the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark. First pitch of the NJAC contest is set for 3:30 pm.
