Montclair, NJ (4/3/05) - Senior attack Chad Wagoner scored four goals and assisted on three others as Oneonta State used a strong second quarter en route to a 16-11 victory over Montclair State in NCAA Men's Lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.
Ben Blaisdell added four goals and Sean Sullivan had three as the Red Dragons (4-4) scored nine consecutive goals, including seven in the second quarter.
JOHN DELLA PESCA had three goals while
KEVIN GONDRES collected two goals and three assists for the Red Hawks (4-5), who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Tied at 3-3 with 25 seconds left in the first period, Sullivan began Oneonta's run with a man-down goal and Wagoner followed with a tally five seconds before the end of the quarter as the Red Dragons took a 5-3 lead. Neal Campbell and Tyler Dunne scored 11 seconds apart in the second to push the lead to 7-3 before Blaisdell registered consecutive goals, the second with 6:26 to play in the period. Wagoner's fourth goal, a man-down marker with 5:04 left, made the score 10-3 and Sullivan got his third 33 seconds later. Blaisdell closed out the half as he scored with 22:24 to play as Oneonta took a 12-3 lead into intermission.
In the third quarter, Keith Horn's man-advantage goal put Oneonta in front, 14-5, however, Montclair State would real off five straight to cut the deficit to four.
DAVE ARMSTRONG got the Red Hawks going as he scored with 3:14 to go. Della Pesca scored 24 seconds later as the third quarter ended with the Oneonta up 14-7.
EVAN WEHMEYER and
BRIAN FISCHER scored identical-looking goals nearly a minute apart in the fourth period to trim the lead to five and Della Pesca's third tally with 6:39 left got the Red Hawks within 14-10. Dan Orlowski would quiet any hopes of an MSU comeback as he scored with 3:15 remaining and Campbell added his second goal with 2:45 to go.
Rick Freud made 13 saves in goal for the Red Dragons, , which outshot Montclair State, 48-40. Tom Bowers had nine saves in goals for the Red Hawks as he split the game with
TIM CONDRON, who also made nine saves.
The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, April 6 as they host Richard Stockton at Sprague Field. Face-off of the Knickerbocker Conference contest is set for 7:00 pm
