Hoboken, NJ (4/30/05) - Senior midfielder Valerie Barnhart scored five goals to guide 14th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology past Montclair State 14-6 in the championship game of the Knickerbocker Women's Lacrosse Conference Tournament on Saturday at DeBaun Field.
Stevens (15-2) earned its third straight Knickerbocker championship in the league's three-year history.
Montclair State falls to 11-5 with two of its five losses coming to Stevens. Freshman
JENNIFER TANIS had three goals and an assist for the Red Hawks.
Stevens opened up the second half with seven straight goals to take a commanding 13-6 lead. Sophomore midfielder Theresa Dolan senior attack Rebecca Quinn and Barnhart netted two goals apiece in the 15-minute span.
Montclair State scored the first goal of the game on a free position shot by
BRIANNA GILLIN. The Ducks totaled the next four goals before the Redhawks scored their second of the game with 11:20 remaining in the half. Dolan netted her second goal of the game to increase Stevens' lead to 5-2, but Montclair answered with back-to-back goals in 29 seconds to cut the Ducks' lead to one. Barnhart tallied a goal with 14 seconds remaining to hold a 6-4 halftime advantage.
Freshman goaltender Stephanie Linder made eight saves for the Ducks.
KRISTEN KUHMANN had seven saves for Montclair State.
