Little Falls, NJ – Junior third baseman Justin Heller drove in a run and four York pitchers combined on a nine-hit shutout as the Spartans blanked Montclair State, 2-0, in NCAA Division III Baseball action at Yogi Berra Stadium on Monday afternoon.
Brendan Gilroy pitched 7 1/3 solid innings as York (27-13-1) defeated Montclair State (13-20) for the second time in a week. Last Monday, the Spartans rallied for a 10-9 extra-inning victory at Jaquet Field in Pennsylvania .
ETHAN BOYD went 2-for-3 as he became the 11 th player in MSU history to record 200 hits in a career.
York got the only run it would need in the top of the second a Jeff Moore reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a MSU's
JAY COOK fanned the next hitter for the second out, Heller line a single to right, scoring Moore with the first run. York would add an insurance run in the seventh. Chad Hockenjos led off with a base hit and Jeff Young was hit by a pitch putting runners at first and second. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base before Mike Welch lofted a sacrifice fly scoring pinch runner Tom Beck.
Meanwhile, the Red Hawks struggled to find a way to break through leaving 12 men on base, including 11 in scoring position. Gilroy (3-1) did the most damage as he went 7 1/3 innings allowing eight hits. He struck out three and walked two escaping a pair of jams. In the fourth, Gilroy allowed a two-out triple to
BRIAN BUTLER and a walk to Boyd, who then stole second. Gilroy got out of the inning by inducing a fly ball. Then in the sixth with the game still 1-0, Montclair 's
JOHN JEDINY collected a leadoff double and went to third on a sacrifice. However, Gilroy stranded the runner with a pair of ground outs to first base.
Montclair again threatened in the eighth as Boyd walked to start the inning and
TOMMY WARTH followed with a base hit. Jediny's sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third, but Zac Clark came out of the pen to retire the next two hitters, ending the threat.
MSU would get one more chance in the ninth as
MATT HARTWICK drew a walk and
ED KLOEPPING blooped a single putting runners a second and third. A sacrifice put runners at second and third but Matt Gonzalez struck out the next hitter. Steve Shanahan came on to record the final out for his second save of the season.
Cook was the hard luck loser as he fell to 3-2. The righthander struck out eight and walked two while giving up eight hits and two runs (one earned).
Butler and
MARC DECASTRO had two hits for Montclair State while Matt Westover and Bryan Bednarczyk each had two hits for York .
The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, May 4 as they travel to Ewing , NJ to face The College of New Jersey in the opening round of the 2005 NJAC Baseball Championship at 3:30 pm .
