LAUREN KOWALSKI scored a pair of goals, but it wasn't enough as Montclair State fell to Simmons, 3-2, in the opening round of the Wellesley Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Red Hawks to 0-3 on the season.
JESS AMENDOLA and
DARA NALVEN each had assists for MSU. Montclair will now face Bay Path College (MA) in the Consolation Game on Sunday, September 11 at 12:00 pm. Bay Path fel lto host Wellesley, 9-1. It will be a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III Tournament game, won by MSU at Sprague Field, 4-0.
Simmons took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the contest, an advantage it held heading into the second half. Kowalski then tied the game with 23:54 to play off an assist by Nalven. But Simmons answered with a pair of goals, the first coming with 14:32 to play and the second with 5:13 to go for a 3-1 lead. Kowalski netted her second with 54 seconds to play, but Montclair got no closer
Kristen Kuhmann made five saves for the Red Hawks, who were outshot in the game, 12-10.
