Scranton, PA (9/16/05) – The Montclair State volleyball team split their first two matches at the Scranton Invitational on Friday evening. The Red Hawks (4-4) posted their third consecutive sweep with a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence before having their three-match win streak stopped with a 3-0 loss to host Scranton.
Montclair State had three players reach double figures in kills and digs as MSU topped St. Lawrence, 30-28, 30-27 and 30-27.
Freshman
JULIANA FERDINAND and junior
HEATHER ACIZ each had 11 kills while freshman
SAMANTHA KARPINSKI added 10 kills, a service aces and three total blocks. Sophomore
ZAIRY RAMOS had eight as Montclair State got 34 assists and 11 digs from sophomore setter
MELISSA CIACCIO. Aciz led the way with 19 digs while
JANIELLE SANCHEZ had 17.
Scranton put a halt to MSU's win streak as the Royals posted the three-game sweep, 30-20, 30-19 and 30-27.
Aciz had nine kills, three service aces and six digs while Karpinski and Ferdinand each had eight kills. Ciaccio collected 16 assists and freshman
LAUREN ZAGEN added six addists and nine digs off the bench. Sanchez led Montclair State with 19 digs and Ramos collected three kills, two aces and 10 digs.
The Red Hawks, who finished second in their Pool bracket, now move into Saturday's action in the Purple Bracket where they will face York Colllege (PA) at 10:00 am before closing our action with a 2:00 pm match vs. DeSales.
