Montclair, NJ (9/17/05) – Sophomore forward
JENNIFER TANIS scored once in each half as 12 th-ranked Montclair State remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Muhlenberg College in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper
ROBYN APICELLI turned aside six shots for her fourth consecutive shutout as the Red Hawks begin a season 5-0 for the second straight year. Junior Lauren Schram made 11 saves for the Mules (4-3), who dropped their third straight.
For the second straight season, Tanis proved to be the difference against Muhlenberg as she notched her second and third goals of the season. Last year, Tanis had the game-winner in MSU's 1-0 win over the Mules in the title game of the Muhlenberg Invitational.
Tanis may have posted a hat trick if not for a brilliant defensive save by junior Kate Moyer in the first two minutes. After MSU pushed the ball inside the circle, Tanis got a shot past Schram that appeared headed for the goal, but Moyer picked the ball off the goal line to keep the game scoreless. From there the game became a defensive battle with Apicelli making a pair of saves and Schram eight until the Red Hawks finally broke through.
An offensive rush by MSU with 5:54 to play in the first half led to Tanis ' first goal.
JESS ROSEWALL pushed toward the cage and lifted a shot from the right side that Tanis was able to deflect in for the goal as Montclair State led, 1-0 at halftime.
Muhlenberg threatened in the second half, but Apicelli came up with two saves early to keep MSU in front. Tanis would then extend the lead at the 49:18 mark with her second of the game. Taking a long pass down the left side, Tanis moved across the field, getting around Schram before knocking a shot inside the right post for her third career multiple goal contest.
The Mules had two chances to cut the deficit in half. With just over nine minutes remaining, Nikki Rhoads unleashed a hard shot off a penalty corner that Apicelli kicked away. Jillian Duffy would get off a shot a minute later that sailed wide of the goal.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 21 as the Red Hawks travel to Manhattanville to face the Valiants at new time. The game will now be played at 7:00 pm. Muhlenberg will host Drew University at the same time.
