No. 11 Montclair Blanks Scranton

Scranton, PA (9/28/05) - Montclair State University applied the pressure early and often in a 4-0 victory over The University of Scranton in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Fitzpatrick Field.

The 11th-ranked Red Hawks, behind two goals by junior midfielder KRISTEN SWARTZ and a goal and two assists by sophomore forward JENNIFER TANIS, bolted out to a 3-0 lead by intermission to improve to 7-0 on the season. The loss dropped the Royals to 5-3.

The win was also the 46th for MSU head coach Beth Gottung, tying her with Dawn Strunk (1998-2001) for second-best victoy total by an Montclair State field hockey coach.

Montclair kept Scranton on defense throughout much of the first half and finally broke through on a goal by Swart off an assist by Tanis at the 11:50 mark. Tanis came through again for the Red Hawks at the 27:49 mark by setting up senior forward ALEXANDRIA KELLY on a give-and-go on the left side of the Royal net for a goal. Swartz made it 3-0 by blasting in a shot from 18 yards out off of an assist by sophomore midfielder SHANNON GILL with less than four minutes remaining before halftime.

Tanis closed out the scoring less than two minutes in the second half, when she tapped in a goal off a pass from Kelly. The Red Hawks out-shot the Royals 23-11.

Senior goalie ROBYN APICELLI made eight saves to earn the shutout, while Scranton's Rochelle Paquette was credited with a game-high 10 saves before giving way to freshman Kristina Goetz, who played the final 29 minutes and made four saves.
