Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Swartz, Kelly Lead MSU to Season-Opening Win, 4-1

Montclair, NJ (9/3/05) – Junior forward KRISTEN SWARTZ (Hatboro, PA, Hatboro Horsham) scored a pair of goals while Alex Kelly (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) added a goal and an assist as Montclair State opened its 2005 season with a 4-1 victory over Washington College (MD) in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Saturday evening.

Freshman JESS ROSEWALL (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) recorded a pair of assists in her collegiate debut as MSU (1-0) outshot the Shorewomen (0-1), 20-7, in the contest. Rachel Miller (Greene, NY/Greene Central) scored the lone goal for Washington College, which got nine saves from goalkeeper Erin O'Brien (Havre de Grace, MD/John Carroll).

After a scoreless eight minutes, Swartz put the Red Hawks on the board as she redirected a shot from Kelly past O'Brien for the only goal of the half. In the second half, Montclair would break the game open with three goals. BRISA CASAS (Accord, NY/RondoutValley) put a shot on goal from the right side of the cage. Kelly was there to deflect the shot into the lower right corner, extending the MSU to 2-0 with 23:54 remaining.

Just over 11 minutes later, Swartz notched her second of the game, this one off a penalty corner. Rosewall picked up the assist for her first collegiate point. The Red Hawks added one more goal at 62:23 as KARLI TROISI (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) tapped in a pass from Rosewall giving Montclair a 4-0 cushion.

Miller averted the shutout for the Shorewomen with 48 seconds to go in the contest. Amanda Garbart (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Institute) put a shot on goal that MSU goalkeeper ROBYN APICELLI (Ocenaport, NJ/Shore Regional) saved. However, the ball bounced out to Miller along the right side. Millen then banged home the ball into the open cage for the goal.

Apicelli made five saves for the Red Hawks, who had 14 penalty corners in the game.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, September 6 as they travel to Eastern University (PA) for a 4:00 pm start.
