TCNJ Fends Off Women's Basketball

Ewing, NJ (1/11/06) - The College of New Jersey women's basketball team hosted Montclair State University on Wednesday night in Packer Hall in a NJAC game. TCNJ recorded its sixth straight win as they beat the Red Hawks 67-63 and is now 8-4 overall and 5-2 in the NJAC, while MSU is now 7-6 and 5-2 in the league.

The Lions got 15 points from both senior forward Erin Frank and junior Megan Hueter as they was snapped MSU's four game NJAC win streak.

TCNJ led 35-33 at the half as after trailing by as many as eight points, 31-23 with 4:46 left in the first session. Frank added four straight free throws for the Lions in the last 1:40 to tie the action and give TCNJ a lead at the break. Frank would net 11 of her 15 points in the first half as TCNJ shot 50.0% from the floor (14-28).

MSU was held to 41.2% from the floor in the first half as junior forward STEPHANIE MACHIN and MICHELLE MADEJ added eight points each. Machin finished with 14 points while both Madej and junior FERIN CATLETT netted 12 points for the Red Hawks. Sophomore JESSICA GARRABRANT paced MSU with a game-high 12 rebounds, including eight defensive boards.

TCNJ's senior Tiara Simpkins ( Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) added 14 points off the bench to pace the Lions as she added 10 in the second half .

The game was knotted at 59-59 with 3:06 left to play when TCNJ went on a 5-0 run and took a 64-59 lead with 1:51 left to play. Simpkins sunk a three-pointer and junior Megan Hueter added a lay-up to key the run.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, January 14 as they host 18th-ranked Richard Stockton College of Panzer Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm
