Balanced Efforts Sends Women's Basketball Past Hunter

Montclair, NJ (1/30/06) – Sophomore guard JESSICA GARRABRANT posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while classmate CYNTHIA WARRINGTON added 10 point as Montclair State used a strong second half to post their sixth straight win with a 57-47 triumph over Hunter College in NCAA Division III Women's Basketball action at Panzer Gymnasium.

STEPHANIE MACHIN had nine points and six rebounds as the Red Hawks (13-6) bounced back from an eight-point halftime deficit. Jennifer Ithier had 13 points and three assists for the Hawks (11-10), which dropped its second straight.

MSU struggled from the field in the first half shooting just 24 percent (7-of-29), however the Red Hawks turned things around in the second starting with 15-2 run that gave the Red Hawks their first lead of the game. Six different players scored in the spurt, including four straight by JESSICA HORAN that gave Montclair its first lead of the game, 32-30 with 13:56 to play. FERIN CATLETT capped the run with a three-point play.

MEGHAN KELLEY connected on a jumper to put the Red Hawks in front, 39-32 and MARIANNE MCGOVERN's two foul shots gave MSU a double-digit lead at 43-42 with 9:48 to play.

Hunter would get back within 45-38 as Caitlin McDougall scored on a layup, but AMANDA MULLANEY converted a three-point play and Garrabrant hit a layup before Warrington drained a long three to make the score 53-38 with 4:53 to go.

Horan and McGovern each had six points while Mullaney had five points, eight rebounds and two blocks. The Red Hawks shot 57 percent (12-of-21) in the second half and went 12-of-14 (86 percent) from the charity stripe. MSU was 17-of-23 from the foul line in the game.

Krystin Suarez had nine points while Topaz Robbins added eight and seven boards. Like Montclair State in the first half, Hunter was cold from the floor over the final 20 minutes making just 6-of-30 attempts (20 percent). Jamie Wilson had eight rebounds for the Hawks, who outrebounded MSU, 41-38, including 19 offensive rebounds.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, February 1 as the Red Hawks travel to Ramapo College for a 5:30 NJAC tipoff. Hunter will be in action on Friday, February 3 at home against City College of New York.
