Newark, NJ (10/21/06) – The Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up their 2006-07 season with a pair of victories as the Red Hawks swept a tri-meet from New Jersey Tech and Baruch College.
The MSU men won their two meets defeating NJIT, 47-45 and Baruch, 51-41 while the women posted a 49-35 win against Baruch. The Red Hawk women also knocked off NJIT, 47-17.
On the women's side, junior
KRISTINE BATES ( Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and senior
JESSICA GUTH ( Andover, NJ/ Newton) were each triple winners. Bates won the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.66 while Guth took first place in the 200 individual medley (2:32.35). Later in the meet, Guth captured the 100 butterfly (1:07.78) and Bates swam a 59.50 in winning the 100 freestyle. The duo then swam the third leg and anchor leg, respectively, on the winning 200 medley relay team which posted a time of 2:06.50. Guth and Bates were joined on the relay by
KAITLIN MUCHLER ( Vineland, NJ/ Vineland) and
TRACEY GROEL ( Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury).
Other winners on the women's side included sophomore
AMY WUKO (Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood Catholic), who won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 12:26.35. Freshman Jess Patalano ( Edison, NJ/Bishop Ahr) was victorious in her first collegiate competition as she took first in the 200 freestyle (2:11.87).
For the MSU men, senior
MOHAMED ABDELAAL ( Bayonne, NJ/ Bayonne) won three events as he won the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 22.69 and 50.78, respectively. He then swam the anchor leg on the winning 200 medley relay squad as he was joined by
JOHN ADAMS (Wharton, NJ/Pope John XXIII), Joe Sweeney (Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon) and
TIM CHAMBROVICH (Allenhurst, NJ/Red Bank Regional).
AHMED ABDELAAL ( Bayonne, NJ/ Bayonne) won the 200 freestyle (2:01.90) while Chambrovich added a victory in the 200 individual medley (2:06.78). Freshman
BRANDON SANDS ( Easton, PA/Wilson Area) was a winner in his collegiate debut as he took top honors in the 1000 freestyle (11:08.82).
The Red Hawks return to action as they travel to Ewing, NJ on Friday, October 26 to take on The College of New Jersey in a dual meets which is set to begin at 6:00 pm.
