JACQUIE SUPKO (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) stopped all four attempts during the stroke off while
MEGAN WALSH (Lumberton, NJ/Racocas Valley) and
SHANNON GILL (Branchville, NJ/High Point) each scored as the Montclair State field hockey team, ranked 13 th in Division III, defeated 18 th-ranked Eastern University, 3-2 in NCAA action at Sprague Field on Monday evening. MSU won the shootout, 2-0.
Walsh and
JEN SOSS ( Hamilton , NJ /Steinert) each had goals during regulation as the Red Hawks improved to 11-3 this season with their second straight win. MSU also improved to 5-0 all-time against the Eagles.
Jamie Heck ( Butler , NJ / Butler ) and Stephanie Moyer ( Telford , PA /Christopher Dock) each had goals for Eastern, which held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game before falling to 14-4 on the season.
Deadlocked after two regulation and two overtime periods, the teams headed into penalty strokes where Montclair State won the toss and elected to shoot first. Walsh stepped into the line and netted her attempt. Christy Miller ( Elverson , PA / Twin Valley ) was first for the Eagles, however her attempt was knocked away by Supko with a glove save.
Eastern goalkeeper Kelly Garland (Lanhartsville, PA/Kutztown) turned away the Red Hawks' second attempt and Supko kept Montclair in front with her second stop, a stick save against June Antes (Brandt) (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central). In the third round, Garland again made a save on Soss' attempt but Supko countered with a diving stick save versus Lindsay Moyer ( Telford , PA /Christopher Dock) .
In the fourth round, Gill collected what would turn out to be the game-winner, but it took one more save by Supko to clinch the shootout. Facing Lauren Latsha ( Middletown , PA / Harrisburg Christian), Supko knocked away the ball on her left side giving the Red Hawks the win.
Supko finished with seven saves in regulation before adding four more in the stroke-off. Garland had 16 during the first 100 minutes and the two in the strokes.
Heck gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 22:15 mark of the first half as she tapped in a loose ball in front of the cage for her 10 th goal of the season. Montclair State would even the game 18 seconds before halftime as Walsh scored off a
JENNIFER TANIS ( Oak Ridge , NJ / Jefferson ) assist for her second tally of the year and a 1-1 tie at intermission.
Moyer put Eastern back in front at 47:04 of the second half as she blasted a shot off a penalty corner for her sixth of the year. Montclair would square the contest again just over 11 minutes later as Soss took a pass from
JUSTINE DIPAOLO ( Lanoka Harbor , NJ /Lacey) and banged home her sixth goal.
Montclair State outshot the Eagles, 26-13 and held a 24-12 advantage in penalty corners.
