JENNIFER TANIS (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson) scored four times and added two assists, breaking one single-game school record and tying another as Montclair State, ranked seventh in Division III, downed SUNY New Paltz, 9-1 in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Thursday evening.
Senior forward
KRISTEN SWARTZ (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) added three goals and an assist for the Red Hawks (9-1), who had seven different players register points in the game.
Jacqueline Sisco (Wappingers Falls, NY/John Jay) scored once while Jess Malone (Congers, NY/Clarkstown South) made 10 saves for New Paltz (1-8), which fell to 0-7 against Montclair State all time.
Tanis collected a career-high 10 points as she broke the single-game mark of eight accomplished four times, the last time by Sarah Levine against Eastern Connecticut in 2002. She also tied the mark for goals in a game and moved within four points of Levine's career scoring mark of 88 points from 2000-03. Tanis has 84 points in 49 career games, including 37 (14 goals, nine assists) in 10 games this year.
Swartz put MSU on the board 5:45 into the game as she took a pass from Tanis in front of the cage and slapped a shot into the lower left corner of the cage past New Paltz goalkeeper Nicole Kovac (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius). Sisco would tie the game under eight minutes later with her fourth goal of the season. Ashley Smith (Selden , NY /Newfield) ripped a shot from the top of the circle that Sisco deflected in for the goal.
Montclair State would then reel off the next eight goals beginning with Swartz' second of the game, a deflection off an attempt by
JEN SOSS (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) on a penalty corner giving the Red Hawks a 2-1 lead at 17:43. Swartz would get the hat trick three minutes later as she and Tanis executed a perfect give-and-go in front of the cage to boost the lead to two goals.
Tanis then registered her hat trick over the next eight minutes as she scored a 22:19 off an assist from Swartz and 62 seconds later collecting her second as her shot from close range hit off Kovac and trickled in. The third goal came with 6:22 to play in the opening period and gave MSU a 6-1 lead at halftime. Tanis completed her evening just over two minutes into the second half as she knocked in goal number four off an assist from
MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, NJ/Red Bank Catholic).
Soss and
BRITTANY PALKO (Medford , NJ / Shawnee) capped off the MSU scoring with goals at 38:40 and 65:32, respectively.
Kovac made three saves in 28 minutes before giving way to Malone. Freshman
