BRYAN KLIMCHAK (right) scored a career-best nine goals, one shy of the MSU single-season record as the Red Hawks won their third straight, 19-10 over Manhattanville College in Knickerbocker Conference on Wednesday evening.
DAVE ARMSTRONG and
EVAN WEHMEYER each scored three times as the Red Hawks improved to 3-2 overall and in the KLC. Klimchak fell one short of tying the mark set by George Nucera against CCNY in 1979 and matched by Pete Zorich. Zorich coincidentally also matched the record against Manhattanville in 1990.
The Valiants got on the board first as Dan Hannon scored with 10:48 in the first period. Montclair State then responded with a five-goal outburst bridging the first and second quarters. Klimchak scored the first of his career-high nine goals with 8:52 left in the first and A.J. Bachman put the Red Hawks in front for good with a tally at 2:29 as MSU led 2-1 after 15 minutes of play.
Ed Carswell scored unassisted just over five minutes into the second and Armstrong netted his first goal 50 seconds later to make the score 4-1 with 9:51 left.
ADAM AHMAD scored his first collegiate goal with 8:14 to go for a four-goal advantage. Manhattanville would trim the lead back to 5-3, however, Klimchak scored with 2:15 left before half and after another goal by the Valiants, Armstrong connected on the man advantage as the Red Hawks led 8-4 at halftime.
In the second half, Armstrong got his second goal 20 seconds into the period and Klimchak followed with two goals in a 23-second span as Montclair took a 10-4 lead. Andy Nagy countered for Manhattanville to get the Valiants within 11-6 with 9:32 remaining in the third, by Klimchak scored two goals in a 16-second span and Wehmeyer scored with 8:23 on the clock as Montclair State built a 14-6 lead.
Armstrong recorded a career-high seven assists to go along with his three goals while Wehmeyer added two assists. Ahmad scored two goals and had two assists outshot the Valiants, 39-36.
DAN CUFF had 11 saves in his second start.
The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday, March 21 as they travel to Richard Stockton College for a 3:30 pm Knickerbocker Conference matchup with the Ospreys.
