Montclair, NJ (3/25/06) – Junior Shana Smeriglio scored four times while Katie Kline added three goals as Rowan University used a seven-goal spurt in the first half to push its way to a 16-9 victory over Montclair State in NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Maggie Goodman added two goals and four assists for the Profs (5-2), who have won three straight scoring a whopping 54 combined goals in the trio of wins.
JENNIFER TANIS and
BETHANY BLAINE each had three goals for the Red Hawks, who fell to 3-2 on the season.
MSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 3:15 of the game as Blaine scored both goals. Her first came 29 seconds into the contest and the second off an assist from
SHAUNA BROCKLEBANK put the Red Hawks up two. Goodman responded for Rowan with two of her own, knotting the game with 19:28 remaining in the opening period. Tanis would put the Red Hawks back in front 15 seconds later, however, the Profs countered with their game-decisive run.
Kline got the goals rolling as she scored with 18:46 to play to tie the game and Amanda Silvestri put Rowan in front, 4-3 on a free-position goal. Caitlin Meseroll netted a goal with 16:06 to go before Kline scored twice to put Rowan ahead, 7-3 with 13:35 left. Silvestri would assist on a goal by Lauren Crennan before Smeriglio capped off the run with her first goal as Rowan led 9-3 with 8:34 left before halftime.
Montclair State would cut the lead back to 11-6 before halftime as Brocklebank and Tanis both scored inside three minutes before intermission. Rowan would put the game away scoring the first four goals of the second half, two by Smeriglio, whose third of the game with 10:33 remaining put the Profs in front, 16-5. Smeriglio would get her fourth goal with 6:34 to play.
Christina Ivy had a goal and an assist for the Profs, who outshot Montclair State , 34-25 in the contest. Goodman added a draw, three ground balls and four caused turnovers for Rowan.
Katherine Rowland made nine saves, including six in the first half.

DINA MORRONE. Goalkeeper Kristin Kuhmann had 13 saves for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 30 as they travel to Madison , NJ to face Drew University at 5:00 pm.
