Montclair, NJ (3/26/06) – Sophomore midfielder Kyle Farris scored three times and Mickey Norton had a pair of goals during a decisive seven-goal spurt in the second half as Muhlenberg College knocked off Montclair State, 10-9, in NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.
James Robinson had three goals for the Mules (3-2), who trailed 7-3 in the third quarter before rallying to beat MSU by a one-goal margin for the second straight season. Last year, the Mules posted a 12-11 overtime victory in Allentown.
A.J. Bachman had four goals and an assist while
EVAN WEHMEYER added two goals for the Red Hawks, who fell back to the .500 mark at 4-4.
Bachman's third goal of the game with 13:14 to play in the third quarter put Montclair State up 7-3, however, the Mules would respond with their seven-goal spurt that bridged the third and fourth periods. Norton started the run as he scored on a man-advantage with 11:55 to play and he added another power-play marker with 8:20 to play to pull the Mules within 7-5. Farris scored less than a minute later on another man-up situation to slice the lead to one and Sean Toohill tied the game with 6:24 left in the third. Brian O'Neill gave Muhlenberg its first lead of the game with 5:26 to play and Farris' second of the contest with 42 seconds left gave the Mules a 9-7 lead heading into the final quarter.
Farris would cap off the scoring explosion with his third tally 1:36 into the final period to make the score, 10-7. Montclair State would get the deficit back to two with 10:28 left as
BRYAN KLIMCHAK scored unassisted. The game then went scoreless to inside two minutes when Bachman connected with 1:26 left bringing MSU within 10-9. Montclair would then get the ensuing faceoff and have four chances to tie the game.
DAVE ARMSTRONG and Klimchak each had shots go wide. The Red Hawks' best opportunity came with 27 seconds left, however
ADAM AHMAD was denied by Muhlenberg goalkeeper Daniel Kotch. Ed Carswell got one final shot that went wide.
Kotch had 13 saves for the Mules.
Klimchak had two goals for Montclair State, which held a 40-34 advantage in shots in the game.
DAN CUFF had nine saves in goal for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, March 29 as they travel to New York Maritime for a Knickerbocker Conference contest at 7:00 pm.
