York, PA - Montclair State got outstanding pitching and took advantage of a error to plate two runs in the fifth as the Red Hawks knocked off York College (PA), 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
NICK RECCHIA (3-1) tossed four shutout innings to pick up the victory as the Red Hawks imrpoved to 5-6-2.
Chad Hockenjos had two hits for the Spartans (10-8) which had its two game winning streak snapped.
Montclair snapped the scoreless tie in the fifth getting their runs with two outs.
MARC DECASTRO reached on an infield single and moved to second when
JAMES SCELZO was hit by a pitch.
DANNY RODRIGUEZ then lofted a fly ball to left field that was misplayed allowing both runners to score.
York would get a run back in their half of the inning. Valenza walked with one out and moved to second on a passed ball. After a strikeout, Valenza went to third on a wild pitch and scored as Hockenjos singled through the left side.
York would threaten in the seventh as Mike Welch led off the inning with single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. However,
TIM STRINGER would strand Welch there as he got P.J. Valenza to line out to center and Justin Kaplan to ground out to second to end the inning.
Stringer would pitch the eighth before giving way to
MARTY CABALAR in the ninth. Cabalar set the side down in order to record his second save of the year.
Recchia went the first four innings in his predetermined start, striking out four and walking one. Brad McCullough (1-4) took the hard-luck loss allowing four hits and the two unearned runs in eight innings. McCullough fanned nine and walked three.
Stringer allowed three hits and struck out two in his four-inning stint.
Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 30 as they open their NJAC slate against Kean University in Union at 3:00 pm.
