Vicaro Delivers Game-Winner as MSU Edges Kean in 11 Innings, 7-6

Little Falls, NJ – Junior catcher ANDREW VICARO singled home ROB BOWNESS in the bottom of the 11th inning as Montclair State edged Kean University, 7-6 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Bowness and BRIAN BUTLER each finished with two RBI as the Red Hawks (13-9-2) knocked off the Cougars (20-9, 4-4 NJAC) for the second time this season while improving to 6-2 in the NJAC.

After stranding a Kean runner at third to end the top of the 11th inning, Montclair needed just three batters to score its winning run. Bowness opened the inning with a single through the middle against reliever Andrew Cupido. LOU POLITAN sacrificed Bowness to second before Vicaro drove a ball to right for a base hit bringing home the game-winning run.

Kean grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Maikel De La Rosa scored on an error with Perry Schatzow adding an RBI triple and Mike Gianakas an infield single for a run. Butler got a run back for MSU in the bottom half with a double however Schatzow's RBI double in the third gave the Cougars a 4-1 lead.

MICHAEL NUNES lofted a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Bowness' two-run single in the fifth knotting the game at 4-4. Aaron Richard regained the lead for Kean in the sixth with an RBI ground out and Schatzow's third run batted in on a bases-loaded walk made the score 6-4.

The Red Hawks quickly countered in its half of the sixth. Nunes scampered home on a wild pitch with a Butler sac fly tying the game for a second time.

Righthander MARTY CABALAR (1-0) picked up the victory as he recorded the final four outs before Vicaro's heroics in the 11th. Cupido, who logged six innings in relief took the loss to fall to 3-1.

Vicaro went 4-for-6 for Montclair with Bowness registering three hits and SCOTT EVANGELIST two. De La Rosa had three hit for Kean with Joe D'Andrea and Schatzow recording two apiece.

Montclair is back in action on Saturday, April 15 with a road NJAC doubleheader at No. 3 The College of New Jersey.
