Pitching Powers Softball to Sweep of NJCU

Little Falls, NJ (4/18/06) – Sophomore third baseman JACKIE FERRANTI belted a gram slam and tied a school record with seven RBI in the opener and Montclair State pitching allowed just one hit in the two games as the Red Hawks swept a doubleheader from New Jersey City University at the MSU Softball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

ATHANASIA TOTARO threw a five-inning no-hitter as Montclair (24-6, 7-5 NJAC) won the opener 15-0.  Totaro then had three hits and drove in two runs as the Red Hawks completed the sweep with a 12-0 triumph in the nightcap.

New Jersey City, which has lost its last 14, fell to 9-22 overall, 0-12 in the NJAC).

In the opener, the Red Hawks broke open a scoreless game with 10 runs in the third as they sent 16 batters to the plate. MAUREEN SHOCKLEY started things off with an RBI single and Ferranti's run scoring single through the left side made it a 2-0 game. MEGAN TANTUM drove in a run with a base hit and later scored on an error for a four-run advantage. LEIGH ANN MURDUCA and WHITNEY DRIVER then added RBI single for a 6-0 lead. Totaro collected an RBI single and Ferranti later added a two-run single for three RBI in the inning as Montclair took the 10-0 lead.

MSU would add five more in the bottom of the fourth Shockley walked with the bases loaded to force in one run before Ferranti blasted a grand slam over the center field fence giving her seven runs RBI, tying Pam Troyano's 1971 single-game mark set against New Paltz.

Totaro, who upped her record to 11-2, struck out eight and walked one as she tossed the fourth no-hitter of her career and fifth shutout of the season. Andrea Delucrezia suffered the loss.

Ferranti had three hits with Totaro, Shockley, Murduca and Driver each collected two. MSU had 14 in the game.

in the second game, righthander CAROLYN MCCREA nearly matched Totaro as she struck out five in four innings allowing just a one-out single to pitching counterpart Vanessa Nicolich in the second inning. McCrea improved to 11-4 on the season with DANA WARNOCK recording the final three outs.

Montclair got on the board in the third a Totaro doubled with one out, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. The following inning, MSU added three runs, KELLY KARP drove in a run with a base hit and Totaro sacrificed home a run to make the score, 3-0. Crystal Dahlhaus would later score as Montclair led by four.

The Red Hawks put the game away with an eight-run fifth. Tantum doubled in the first run and Karp's RBI single made it 6-0. Dahlhaus and Totaro registered RBI singles and Shockley's two-run triple made it 10-0.  JENNIFER JIMENEZ and ASHLEY LUSTENBERGER would collect RBI singles for the final two Montclair runs.

Totaro was 3-for-3 while Ferranti, Tantum, Karp and Dahlhaus each had two hits as Montclair State collected 15 in the game.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, April 20 as they host the Bearcats of Baruch College at 3:00 pm. New Jersey City is back home on Saturday, April 22 as they take on Rowan University at Noon.
