Boyertown, PA – Senior
BRIAN BUTLER knocked in two of his game-high five RBIs in a six-run fifth as second-seeded Montclair St. defeated #6 Alvernia, 13-8 in game five of the 2006 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional Thursday morning at Bear Stadium.Montclair advances in the losers bracket and will face #5 Franklin & Marshall Thursday afternoon. Alvernia is eliminated from the regional tournament.
Both teams plated single runs in the first signaling what would clearly not be a pitcher's duel. MSU senior
DANNY RODRIGUEZ reached on a fielder's choice and took off for second with Butler at the plate. Alvernia catcher Dan Myers could not get a good grip on the ball and his throw skipped off the mound and into centerfield allowing Rodriguez to take third. Butler then drove a one-out single to center to bring home the first run of the day.
Alvernia answered in the bottom of the first. Tim Carroll and Eric Focht both reached and stole second and third. Jason Zeigler grounded out to shortstop to bring home Carroll and tie the game.
The Red Hawks (28-17-2) answered back with four runs in the top half of the second inning. A double, a walk, and a single brought home the first run, and Alvernia starter Tim Frisch could see his way out of the inning after getting
MICHAEL NUNES on a pop out to second, but Rodriguez followed with an RBI single and Butler's two-run double put the Red Hawks up 5-1.
Alvernia put two runs on the board in the home half of the second on a pair of bases loaded, fielder's choice ground balls. The Crusaders (30-13) had loaded the bases with just one out when Focht hit a 30-foot dribbler that brought home Myers. Eric Bonds followed with an RBI-groundout and Zeigler's groundball ended the second with the home team down 5-3.
Both teams went scoreless for the first time in the third inning and Alvernia sent nine batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored five runs on three hits and an error. Myers double to the left center gap and with two on, Gomez fielded a Focht bunt and threw wild to first putting two on with one out. Bonds followed with a two-run double that put Alvernia up 6-5 and Raniere hit a two-out, two-run homer to left for a three-run cushion.
MSU wasted no time answering back as it sent 11 men to the plate as part of a six-run fifth inning. Frisch set down the first two batters, but walked
LOU POLITAN and gave up a run-scoring double to
SCOTT EVANGELIST. Two straight singles, a walk, and a two-run single by Butler signaled the end of the day for Frisch. With runners at the corner and two out, the Red Hawks executed the double steal with Rodriguez swiping home for a 10-8 lead. Alvernia reliever Jeremy Hess had
ROB BOWNESS picked off first, but his throw bounced to first allowing MSU's 11th run to cross.
The Red Hawks tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning for the 13-8 final. Alvernia threatened, loading the bases with one out, but a pop up by pinch hitter Zach Lutz and a fly out to right by Bonds ended the game.
Reliever
MARTY CABALAR picked up the win as he tossed a season-high 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Cabalar moved to 3-2 on the year as he allowed six hits, struck out three and walked three.
