Montclair Blanks Washington College (MD) in Opener, 3-0

Chestertown, MD (9/1/06) – Freshman goalkeeper JACQUIE SUPKO (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) stopped nine shots and posted a shutout in her first collegiate game as Montclair State opened its 2006 season with a 3-0 win at Washington College (MD) on Friday afternoon.

JEN SOSS ( Hamilton , NJ /Steinert), KRISTEN SWARTZ (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and JENNIFER TANIS ( Oak Ridge , NJ / Jefferson ) each scored goals as Montclair State (1-0) improved to 4-0 against the Shorewomen. It was also MSU's fifth straight season-opening victory.

Washington prevented Montclair from getting on the board early in the game when freshman goalie Elena Nicholoff ( Tunkahannock , PA /Lackawanna Trail) stopped a penalty stroke less than two minutes into the contest. Supko then helped keep the game scoreless making six saves over the next 10 minutes before the Red Hawks dented the scoreboard with 15:28 remaining in the first half when Soss scored off a penalty corner off an assist from Tanis .

The Red Hawks nearly added to the lead just over 10 minutes later, but Tanis ' shot was knocked away off the goal line by defender Katie Madron. Montclair went up, 2-0, with 6:51 to play in the period on another penalty corner as Swartz scored off an assist from Soss.

The only goal of the second half came when Tanis knocked in a rebound off her own shot with 11:33 left in the contest.

Nicholoff came in for the early stroke and played the second half for Washington , making five saves and allowing one goal. Junior goalkeeper Erin O'Brien (Havre de Grace, MD/John Carroll) made four saves and allowed two goals in the first half for WC.

Montclair State held a 17-12 advantage in shots and a 14-5 edge in penalty corners in the game.

The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 6 when they take on University of Scranton at Sprague Field in the home opener at 7:00 pm.
