Montclair, NJ (9/1/06) - Sophomore forward
TYLER MASTERSON (Long Valley, NJ/ West Morris Central) scored four consecutive goals – three in a 1:58 span of the first half - while senior
ILYAS TASCI (Paramus, NJ / Paramus) added two goals as the Red Hawks topped Centenary College, 8-0, in the 2006 LaQuinta Cup held at MSU's Sprague Field on Friday afternoon.
RYAN MORGAN (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) and
BILL ANTHES (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) each added goals as Montclair (1-0) scored five times in the first half en route to the victory. Freshman Damien DiBuono (Succasunna, NJ / Morris Catholic) had eight saves for the Cyclones (0-1), who were outshot in the contest, 27-5.
DiBuono kept the Red Hawks off the board in the first 13 minutes as he deflected away two shots within the first seven minutes. However, at the 13:41 mark, MSU broke through as Morgan settled a pass from
TODD TUMELTY (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) and fired a shot into the lower right corner for the first goal of the game and the 32nd of his career. Less than two minutes later, MSU extended the lead as Anthes, Montclair's leading scorer from a year ago, scored off a pass from Rudy Crisostomo (Newark, NJ/Newark Eastside) at 15:01.
Masterson entered the game following the second goal and began his own scoring barrage at 29:23 scoring unassisted to put MSU ahead, 3-0. The sophomore then netted his seconds 63 later off a long feed from
LEROY SEQEIRA (Newark, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) and collected the hat trick at 31:20 with another unassisted tally as Montclair State led by five at intermission.
In the second half, Masterson recorded his fourth of the game at 51:57. Tasci would add the final two goals 10 minutes apart. The first came off an assist from
JOHN ESPOSITO (Hillside, NJ/Hillside) at 56:40 with the second from a
JEFF ROWE (Harrisburg, PA/Harrisburg) at 66:42.
Junior
GABE MERLA (Ridgefield, NJ / Ridgefield) and sophomore
NICK MELE (Delran, NJ/Delran) combined on the shutout for the Red Hawks with Mele making the only stop. Senior Donnie Iudica (Dingmans Ferry, PA / St. Mary's) closed out the game for the Cyclones.
The Red Hawks continue action in the LaQuinta Cup on Saturday, September 2 when they face Lebanon Valley at 2:00 pm. Centenary will take on William Paterson in the other game set for Saturday afternoon.
Montclair State has won the last four LaQuinta Inn Cups and six of the eight tournaments contested since 1998.
