Montclair, NJ (9/2/06) - Senior forward
RYAN MORGAN (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) scored the game's lone goal with 12:41 remaining in the first half and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player as Montclair State edged Lebanon Valley, 1-0 in the LaQuinta Inn Cup at a rainy Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
TYLER MASTERSON (Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central) added an assist as the Red Hawks claimed their fifth straight LaQuinta Inn Cup and seventh overall crown since the tournament began in 1998. Morgan, who now has 33 career goals, scored the game-winner in each contest. John Mentzer (Myertstown, PA/ELCO) made five saves for the Flying Dutchmen (0-2), who dropped both games of the tournament by the identical 1-0 margins.
Scoreless through the first 32 minutes of play, Morgan put Montclair State on the board at the 32:19 mark as
OWEN NICHOLS (Princeton, NJ / Princeton) touched a pass to Masterson, who then slid it over to Morgan inside the 18-yardline. Morgan would coral the pass and turn before firing a shot into the upper righthand corner of the net just past the outstretched left arm of Mentzer.
After that, the game went without another score as MSU limited Lebanon Valley to just seven shots in the game. The Flying Dutchmen had one scoring opportunity early in the second half, however, Dan Pitonyak (Langhorne, PA/Holy Ghost) had his shot stopped by MSU netminder
NICK MELE (Delran, NJ/Delran).
Mele had just the one save as he recorded his first career shutout.
