Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Dobiesz, Tanis Ignite MSU Past RPI, 4-1

Montclair, NJ (9/10/06) – Freshman forward REBECCA DOBIESZ (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge)  scored the first two goals while junior forward JENNIFER TANIS (Oak Ridge, NJ / Jefferson) netted the final two as Montclair State remained unbeaten with a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer in the Montclair State / William Paterson Field Hockey Invitational at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.

Tanis and JEN SOSS ( Hamilton , NJ / Steinert)  each added assists for the Red Hawks, who are now 4-0 after sweeping both games of the weekend tournament. Junior forward Michelle Clemente (Rensselaer , NY / Columbia ) scored once for RPI (2-3), which lost both of its games this weekend. RPI fell to William Paterson, 3-2 in overtime on Saturday.

Dobiesz put MSU on top 3:18 into the game as she collected her fourth of the season. Soss put the initial shot on goal that was kicked away by Liz Szewczak ( Enfield , CT /Enrico Fermi) however Dobiesz was there to put in the rebound for the first goal of the game. Less than a minute later off a penalty corner, Tanis fired a shot that Szewczak again made the save. Again the ball bounced over to Dobiesz who stuffed in the shot for her second goal and a 2-0 Montclair lead.

RPI would get a goal back as Clemente collected her fourth of the season. Off a penalty corner – one of seven by the Red Hawks in the first half – Emily Carroll ( Rensselaer , NY / Columbia ) smacked a shot from the top of the circle. Clemente redirected the ball into the upper-middle portion of the cage for the score – the first allowed by Montclair State this season, a span of 220:53.

Montclair led 2-1 at the break and added two more tallies over the final 35 minutes – both off the stick of Tanis . The first came at 44:06. Similar to RPI's goal, this time Soss blasted a shot from the top of the circle and Tanis was able to deflect the ball in for her third goal of the season. Tanis would add her second with just over seven minutes left as she knocked in her own rebound off a save by Szewczak.

Szewczak finished with 12 saves, including several point-blank stops in the second half as RPI remained within striking distance. Montclair outshot RPI, 20-7, including 13-2 in the second half. RPI did have the advantage in penalty corners, 7-6.

Freshman JACQUIE SUPKO (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) finished with four saves in the first 63 minutes before giving way to JACKIE DERICCO (Belmar, NJ/St. Rose), who notched two in the final seven minutes.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, September 16 as they travel to Muhlenberg College to face Mules at 1:00 pm.
