Game Recap: Field Hockey |

MSU Rallies Past C.W. Post, 2-1

Montclair, NJ (9/30/06) – Freshman forward MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) and sophomore JENNA GALLO (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) scored exactly five minutes apart in the second half as Montclair State, ranked sixth in Division III, pulled out a 2-1 victory over Division II C.W. Post in NCAA Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman JACQUIE SUPKO (Moorestown , NJ / Moorestown) made five saves in goal for the Red Hawks, who rebounded from a 2-1 loss to No. 3 The College of New Jersey on Tuesday, to improve to 7-1 on the season. The win by MSU also trimmed C.W. Post's lead in the series to 11-6-1 .

Freshman forward Krystal Napolitano (Coram, NY/Newfield) had a goal for the Pioneers (7-3), who fell for the second time in three games. Senior Pam Guernaccini (Somers Point , NJ /Mainland Regional) stopped seven shots for C. W. Post.

After a scoreless first half, Napolitano got the Pioneers on the board as she registered her seventh goal of the season at 42:06. Sophomore forward Amber Limanni ( Mickleton , NJ /Kingsway Regional)  collected a ball along the end line on the right side of the cage and slid a pass to Napolitano, who tapped in the feed on the lower right side for the first goal of the game. It was the eighth assist of the season for Limanni.

C. W. Post would nearly add to the lead four minutes later, however, Napolitano's shot rolled just along the goalmouth before being cleared out of the circle by the Red Hawks.

Supko would make a pair of saves over the next five minutes, keeping the deficit at a goal and allowing Montclair State to get the equalizer. Junior forward Jen Tanis (Oak Ridge , NJ /Jefferson) moved the ball up to midfield and made a perfect pass to Pietrunti in the middle 35 yards from the goal. Pietrunti then dribbled the ball 20 more and went 1-on-1 with Guernaccini before smacking a shot from 12 yards out into the right side of the cage at 51:42, knotting the contest at 1-all. It was Pietrunti's second goal of the season.

Five minutes later, off a penalty corner – one of 12 by MSU in the match – Gallo put Montclair State ahead with her second goal of the year knocking in her own rebound off a deflected first attempt. The Red Hawks had an opportunity to increase the lead, but Guernaccini came up with one save and Colleen Finn ( Goshen , CT /Wamoso) made a defensive save on another chance.

Montclair State held a 13-9 advantage in shots and had the 12 penalty corners in the game to six for C.W. Post.

The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday, October 3 as they travel to backyard rival William Paterson for a 7:00 pm start. C.W. Post is home on Wednesday, October 4 as they host Drew University at 4:00 pm in Brookville , NY .
