New York, NY (9/30/06) – The Montclair State volleyball team posted a fifth-place finish at the Hunter College Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Red Hawks fell to host Hunter and SUNY Old Westbury before sweeping Centenary College.
Sophomore
SAMANTHA KARPINSKI (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) had 36 kills in the three matches for Montclair as the Red Hawks are now 5-15 overall.
The Red Hawks opened the day with a five-set loss to host Hunter College - MSU's seventh five-set match this season. Hunter took the first two games 30-16 and 30-28 before Montclair evened the match with 30-15 and 30-28 wins. Hunter would take the decisive fifth game, 17-15.
Karpinski had 20 kills and three digs in the match while senior
HEATHER ACIZ (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) had 23 kills and 18 digs. Freshman
ANNA CHESNAKOVA (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) added 11 kills while
RAISA SILVA (Newark, NJ/East Side) had 57 assists and 13 digs. Sopohmore
JULIANA FERDINAND (West New York, NJ/Memorial) had seven kills and 21 digs for MSU.
Montclair then fell to Old Westbury in straight sets, 30-23, 32-30 and 30-24. Karpinski had 10 kills with Chesnakova collecting eight kills.
MEGHAN STEVENS (Woodcliffe Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) had 20 digs with Silva picking up 20 assists and four digs.
The Red Hawks closed out the day with a straight-set win against Centenary, 30-6, 30-15 and 30-12.
Aciz had nine kills, seven service aces and 11 digs while Kara Burham (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) had six kills and six aces. Karpinski had six kills and Silva registered 23 assists and six digs.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, October 3 as they return to Panzer Gymnasium to face local rival William Paterson at 7:00 pm.
