Volleyball Falls Twice at Coast Guard Tri-Match

New London, CT (10/13/07)  – Sophomore KARA BURNHAM had 23 kills while classmate ANNA CHESNAKOVA added 18; however, the Montclair State volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Saturday. MSU (17-13) lost to Richard Stockton, 3-0, and host Coast Guard, 3-1.

The Red Hawks fell to Stockton this season for the second time as the Ospreys posted the win with game victories of 30-24, 31-29, and 30-21. Burnham had 13 kills with Chesnakova chipping in with 10 kills and three total blocks. Freshman DEVON JOHNSTON had eight kills and 13 digs, and freshman KRISTEN RUGGIERI adding a team-best 16 digs. Setter RAISA SILVA finished with 35 assists.

Against Coast Guard, Montclair dropped the first game 30-22 but evened the match with a 31-29 win before Coast Guard took the final two games, 30-20 and 30-21.

Burnham had 10 kills and Johnston nine for MSU. Chesnakova had eight kills and three solo blocks, while KAREN MARTIN had seven kills and 18 digs. Sophomore SARA SIRAG led Montclair with 32 digs while Silva had 36 assists and 15 digs. 

MSU returns to action on Tuesday, October 13, as the Red Hawks travel to Rutgers-Newark for an NJAC matchup. A win by Montclair would lock up the No. 3 seed in the NJAC Tournament, which gets underway on October 30.
