Volleyball Claims No. 3 Seed in NJAC Tournament with Win Over Rutgers-Newark

Newark, NJ (10/16/07)  – Freshman outside hitter DEVON JOHNSTON collected 10 kills and three aces while sophomore setter RAISA SILVA posted a match-high seven aces to go along with 33 assists as Montclair State rolled past Rutgers-Newark, 3-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's volleyball match in The Golden Dome.

The Red Hawks took the match by scores of 30-11, 30-12, and 30-17 as they improved to 18-13 overall and finished their conference slate at 6-2. MSU posted its best league mark since 1997 when it went 6-1, and Montclair also locked up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NJAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, October 30.

Montclair, which has won 18 games for the first time in seven years, will host its first home NJAC Tournament match since 2000 against an opponent to b determined. It was the fourth straight conference victory for Montclair State, which broke a two-match losing streak.

The Scarlet Raiders (1-18, NJAC 0-6) have two more NJAC contests remaining. Rutgers-Newark fell for the 11th straight time. 

Raider sophomore outside hitter Sagan Caldwell equaled her career-high in kills with 15 and added nine digs, but no other Rutgers-Newark player had more than two kills on the night. Junior setter Nazly Hasanizadeh notched 19 assists while sophomore outside hitter Rose Anna Beljour served three of the Raiders' four aces. 

Montclair State roped 18 aces and hit a solid .284 (38 kills, 13 errors, 88 attacks) as a team. Sophomore middle blocker KARA BURNHAM had nine kills and just two errors on 16 swings while sophomore outside hitter KAREN MARTIN was errorless with seven kills on 18 attacks. Sophomore defensive specialist SARA SIRAG collected a match-high 17 digs. CHRISTINE TOSKOVICHserved two aces to bring her season total to 89, one shy of the MSU single-season mark of 90 held by Carmen Alvarado in 2003.

Montclair State travels to Eastern Connecticut at 6 p.m. on Friday.
