Burnham Powers Volleyball Past William Paterson in Four Sets

Wayne, NJ (10/2/07) – Sophomore KARA BURNHAM posted a career-high 20 kills while fellow classmates  ANNA CHESNAKOVA and KAREN MARTIN had 16 and 15, respectively, as Montclair State posted its second straight win with a 3-1 victory over William Paterson in NJAC action at the WPU Rec Center on Tuesday evening.

Setter RAISA SILVA collected 54 assists and nine digs as the Red Hawks downed the Pioneers in four sets, 30-22, 30-19, 28-30, and 30-24 as they improved to 12-10 overall, 3-2 in the NJAC. Sophomore Kelly Helfrich led the Pioneers (13-5, 2-3 NJAC) with 16 kills, adding 13 digs, while classmate Samantha Reed had 20 digs and 10 kills. Senior Dana Hansen notched 30 assists, and senior Tamara Miller chipped in with 12 kills.

Montclair State trailed 3-2 before DEVON JOHNSTON put down a kill to tie the score and ignite a 10-0 MSU run in the opening game. CHRISTINE TOSKOVICH served all 10 points in the spurt, including four service aces. Martin posted consecutive kills as MSU moved out to a 10-3 lead, and Toskovich extended the lead to nine with back-to-back service aces. William Paterson would close within 20-24 as Helfrich recorded her fourth kill of the game. However, Montclair responded with four straight points, including a kill and ace by Burnham as the Red Hawks restored the lead to 28-20. Johnston finished off the game as MSU registered 21 kills in the opening game.

The second game became a back-and-forth contest through the first 18 points until MSU took the lead on an attack error by the Pioneers. Johnston and Martin posted kills on the next two serves to push the lead to 12-9, but WPU got back within 14-13 as Montclair committed an attack error of its own. Toskovich's kill started a six-point run as Montclair State took control and led 19-13 as Martin notched consecutive kills. Martin finished with six kills in the game for the Red Hawks.

Reed and Helfrich each had five kills as William Paterson bounced back to take the third game, 30-28. After six ties in the set, William Paterson took the lead for good as Hansen got the first of her three kills in the game to give the Pioneers a 15-14 lead, and she then served the next four points as WPU increased its lead to five. Montclair would trim the lead back to 21-19 on a kill by Johnston and tied the game for a seventh time at 28-28, as Burnham collected kill number six. But Miller countered with a kill for the Pioneers, and Marilyn Rodriguez finished off the game with another as WPU pushed the match to a fourth set.

In the fourth game, Burnham and Johnston combined on a block to give Montclair a 7-6 lead, and Johnston added a kill as MSU took a 9-6 advantage. William Paterson would get within a point at 14-13, but Burnham had a kill, and a Pioneer attack error restored the lead three-points. Leading 24-20, Montclair put together five consecutive points to build a 28-21 lead. Burnham brought the Red Hawks to match point with her 20th and final kill of the match, and after two points by William Paterson, Martin gave MSU the victory with a kill.

Johnston added 12 kills and five digs for Montclair State, which received three service aces and a match-high 32 digs from libero MEGHAN STEVENS. Toskovich collected seven kills and six service aces as Montclair hit .239 for the match (72-28-184).

Montclair State returns to action on Friday, October 5, at the FDU-Florham Invitational. The Red Hawks will face Manhattanville at 2:00 pm and take on St. Joseph's (Patchogue) at 6:00 pm on the first day of the tournament.
