Volleyball Takes Two at FDU-Florham Invitational

Madison, NJ (10/5/07) – Sophomore ANNA CHESNAKOVA and freshman DEVON JOHNSTON each collected 19 kills while KARA BURNHAM added 18 and 10 service aces as the Montclair State volleyball team swept a pair of matches at the FDU-Florham Invitational on Friday.

KAREN MARTIN added 14 kills as the Red Hawks knocked off Manhattanville and St. Joseph's (Patchogue) to improve to 14-10, matching their victory total from last year.

Chesnakova had 10 kills and added one solo block as Montclair downed Manhattanville, 30-21, 30-11, and 30-11. Burham and Johnston each had eight kills while Martin posted six. Setter RAISA SILVA had 30 assists and three digs, and freshman libero KRISTEN RUGGIERI had two service aces and a team-best 12 digs. Burham had four service aces, and Montclair recorded 23 in the match, the sixth time in 2007 that the Red Hawks have posted 15 or more in a match.

Against St. Joseph's, Burnham continued her solid play with 10 kills, three aces, and two solo blocks as MSU won the match 30-18, 30-25, and 30-25. Johnston led Montclair with 11 kills and had five digs while Chesnakova posted nine kills and two block solos. Silva had 41 assists and five digs while Ruggieri registered 18 digs and two aces as Montclair added 14 more aces to finish with 37 on the day. Martin had eight kills and three digs.

Montclair continues action in the FDU-Florham Invitational on Saturday, October 6, as the Red Hawks will face New Jersey City University at 10:00 am. It will be the second meeting of the year between the teams, as NJCU took a 3-0 win over the Red Hawks back on September 18.
