Volleyball Earns Split to Close Out FDU-Florham Invitational

Madison, NJ (10/6/07) – Freshman DEVON JOHNSTON had 32 kills, and KARA BURNHAM and KAREN MARTIN registered 25 and 19, respectively, as Montclair State split a pair of matches on the final day of the FDU-Florham Invitational on Saturday.

Sophomore ANNA CHESNAKOVA collected 16 kills and eight total blocks, including six solos as the Red Hawks fell to New Jersey City, 3-1 but bounced back with a four-set win over Pitt-Bradford. The split left Montclair's record at 15-11 as it surpassed it win total from 2007.

Montclair suffered its second loss to New Jersey City this season as the Red Hawks won the first game, 30-28 before the Gothic Knights took the final three games, 30-21, 30-25, 30-22. Johnston had 11 kills and 19 digs while Martin posted 10 kills and 16 digs. Burnham and CHRISTINE TOSKOVICH each had eight kills, while Chesnakova recorded seven. Freshman KRISTEN RUGGIERI had 25 assists and 23 digs for Montclair State while RAISA SILVA had 10 digs.

Following the loss, Montclair State rebounded with its win against Pitt-Bradford. MSU won the first game, 30-21, and fell 30-28 before taking the final two games, 30-17 and 30-22. Johnston led the way with a season-high 21 kills and added 18 digs while Burnham added 17 kills. Martin had nine kills and a team-best 33 digs while Ruggieri had two service aces and 30 digs. Chesnakova tallied five total blocks in the game, and Silva collected 53 assists.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, October 9, as the Red Hawks host Ramapo College in their final regular-season home match. The NJAC contest is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
