Cortland, NY (10/27/07) – Sophomore Kylie Burghardt (Lisle/Whitney Point) scored twice off penalty corner plays in the first 10 minutes and nationally eighth-ranked Cortland went on to defeat 20th-ranked Montclair State,4-1, in a non-league game at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex Whit eField.
The Red Dragons won their seventh straight game and are now 16-2on the season. The Red Hawks dropped to 12-6 with the loss.It was the first meeting between the teams since 1992 and just the second contest overall. Cortland has now won both meetings.
Sophomore Lauren Eichenberger (Suffern) and freshman Ashley Hughes(Selden/Comsewogue) also scored for the Red Dragons and junior Stacy Billings (Marathon) made seven saves. Senior

Burghardt's goals came on nearly identical plays, both assisted by junior Kayla Chambers (Craryville/Taconic Hills). Chambers sent a penalty corner pass to the top of the circle, where Burghardt gathered the ball and blasted a shot into the cage 3:30 into the contest. Less than six minutes later, another Chambers penalty corner pass was fielded by Burghardt, who settled the ball just inside the top of the arc and nailed another shot to give Cortland a 2-0 lead.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the 24th minute. A Red Dragon shot hit off the right post and Eichenberger was in the right spot to tap in the rebound from point-blank range. Midway through the second half, Hughes stole a pass in the circle and nailed a 15-yard shot past Supko to push the Cortland advantage to 4-0. Tanis scored the Red Hawks' goal when her shot from a tough angle on the left side after a brief scramble found its way past Billings.
