Montclair , NJ (11/7/07) – Sophomore
MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) and freshman
DEANA HAGEL (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) each tallied a goal as No. 4 seed and defending champion Montclair State blanked fifth-seeded Drew University, 2-0 in the opening round of the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Championship at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore goalkeeper
JACQUIE SUPKO ( Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) made five saves in recording the shutout as the Red Hawks (13-6) moved into the semifinals and will face top-seeded William Paterson on Saturday, November 10 in Wayne at a time to be determined. It will be the second meeting between MSU and the Pioneers this season with WPU posting a 3-1 victory at Sprague Field back on October 2. Montclair is making its eighth appearance in the ECAC Tournament winning titles in 1990, 2001 and last season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stef Rutkowski ( Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) made four saves for the Rangers, who end their season at 11-9 with their second loss to Montclair State in the last 22 days as Drew fell to the Red Hawks, 4-2 back on October 15.
Scoreless through the first half, Montclair State got a save from Supko 4:19 into the period before netting one themselves just over three minutes later. Off a scramble in front of the cage, Pietrunti picked up a loose ball on the left side and flipped in a shot past a sprawling Rutkowski for her 12 th of the season and a 1-0 MSU lead at the 42:54 mark.
Drew nearly responded a minute later, but Supko made a blocker save off a shot from Elizabeth Law ( Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional) to keep Montclair in front. MSU would then extend its lead at 50:15 when Hagel collected her second tally of the year off an assist from
JENNIFER TANIS ( Oak Ridge, NJ / Jefferson).
Again the Rangers almost got a goal back quickly however Supko came up with back-to-back saves on shot by Katie Eggert (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) and Law. Drew then got a penalty corner and got off two more shots the first by Whitney Kerns (Doylestown, PA/Germantown Academy) that Supko kicked aside and the second by Law that was knocked away on a defensive save by
LAUREN ZEHNDER (Emmaus, PA / Southern Lehigh).
Drew held the advantage in shots 11-10 with each team getting seven penalty corners.
