Williams scored 12 points in the first half as MSU shot 48 percent (12-of-25) and built a 32-27 halftime lead. The Red Hawks scored 20 of the game's first 24 points as Williams scored six straight to give MSU a 10-2 lead with 15:29 left. After a John Jay basket, Williams and Washington scored back-to-back buckets before Bradley capped off the game-opening run with five points as MSU led 20-4 with 12:11 left.
But the Red Hawks shooting fortune disappeared in the second half as MSU made just 10-of-29 attempts from the field and misfired on all eight shots from behind the arc. Meanwhile, John Jay found its shooting touch as the Bloodhounds shot a sizzling 18-of-26 (69 percent) from the floor, including 5-of-9 from three-point range.
John Jay opened the half with a 9-0 run as Emilio Gomez sank a free throw and later hit consecutive three-pointers to give the Bloodhounds the lead for good at 36-32 with 17:57 left. Gary Brady capped the short run with a jumper as John Jay went up by nine at 44-35 on a basket by Alex Valerio with 13 minutes to play. Montclair would get within 49-46 on two free throws by
TOM BONARD ( Westfield, NJ / Westfield), however Vaughn Mason scored inside the paint and Valerio put in a layup as John Jay restored the lead to 53-46 with 7:23 remaining.
Brown finished with seven rebounds for Montclair State while
RYAN WASHINGTON ( Edison, NJ / JP Stevens) grabbed four.
