ERIC JOHANNESEN (Matawan, NJ / St. John Vianney) scored 11 points while
DONALD REID (Perth Amboy, NJ / Cardinal McCarrick) and
CARLOS PENA (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) each scored nine as Montclair State got a balanced effort in an 81-35 victory over Berkeley College at Panzer Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
RICHARD BROWN (Newark, NJ / Newark Tech) and
JON GEORGES (West Orange, NJ / St. Peter's Prep) each had eight points as the Red Hawks (1-2) got scoring contributions from 13 different players in picking up their first win of the season.
Jahlil Shannon (Atlantic City, NJ / Atlantic City) and Emmanuel Malasig (Oak Ridge, NJ / Jefferson) each had 10 points for the Bulldogs, who fell to 0-5 on the season with their third loss to Montclair State in as many meetings.
The Red Hawks led from tap to final buzzer and scored the first nine points of the game as
KEN DUDLEY (Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech) scored on a layup and Brown added the next six points before
SEAN YOUNG (Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood) sank a free throw with 16:44 left. Malasig and Richard Webb (Newark, NJ / Weequahic) hit back-to-back three's to cut the lead to 9-6, however Montclair scored the next seven points, including five by Pena to restore the lead to 16-6 with 12 minutes left.
A Shannon jumper got the deficit back under 10, but the Red Hawks went on a 24-8 run over a 10 minute span to build a 44-15 halftime lead.
Geogres added a team-high seven rebounds and blocked two shots as the Red Hawks shot 48 percent (28-of-58) from the floor, including 8-of-19 from three-point range. Young had seven points and five rebounds while
RYAN WASHINGTON (Edison, NJ / JP Stevens) put up six points and three rebounds along with a blocked shot. Dudley and
MAURICE TORRES (Summit, NJ / Summit) scored five points apiece for the Red Hawks.
Rogers Harris (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) and Khalif James (Paterson, NJ / Eastside) netted four points each for Berkeley, which shot just 23 percent (13-of-55) from the field, including 5-of-21 from behind the arc. The bulldogs also committed 30 turnovers in the contest. Shannon also knocked away two field goal attempts.
Montclair State is now off until Thursday, November 29 as the Red Hawks host Philadelphia Bible at Panzer Gymnasium at 8:00 pm in the back half of a men's-women's doubleheader.
