Wayne, NJ – Junior first baseman John Giametta, Jr. (Marlboro, NY/Marlboro) drove in a pair of runs and junior righthander Nick Serio (Bedford Hills, NY/Fox Lane) struck out six over the final 2 2/3 innings to pick up the win as sixth-ranked Cortland remained unbeaten with a 5-1 victory over Montclair State at Wightman Park on the campus of William Paterson University on Saturday afternoon.
Senior rightfielder Dan Maycock (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) went 3-for-4 as the Red Dragons scored in each of the final three innings to improve to 12-0 on the season. Cortland also defeated MSU for fourth time in the last five meetings and took over the the lead in the series, 9-8.
ANDREW VICARO (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and
LOU POLITAN (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) each had two hits for the Red Hawks, who fell to 7-5 on the year.
Montclair State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as
MICHAEL NUNES (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Vicaro. Nunes then scored as
SCOTT EVANGELIST (Northfield, NJ/Holy Spirit) singled up the middle against Cortland starter George Jweid (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) for the game's first run.
But that would be the only run MSU would get against Weid, who got out of the first inning on a line-out double play and then got out of two more innings thanks to twin killings as the Red Dragons trailed by only run. Cortland then tied the game in the top of the seventh as Maycock and Matt Vitalone (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) each singled to start the inning. Maycock would get to third on a fielder's choice and the Red Dragons successfully executed a double steal with Maycock taking home to make the score 1-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Politan led off with a single and moved to second on sacrifice. Serio (1-0) came on and got the next two hitters to keep the game deadlocked.
Cortland would take the lead in the eighth with three runs. Ryan Benson (Selden, NY/Centereach) was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second before scoring on Anthony Coromato's (Utica, NY/Utica Notre Dame) base hit. Giametta then pinch hit and singled to right field to give Cortland a 3-1 advantage. Giametta would score the final run of the inning as he scampered home from third on a wild pitch and then had a sacrifice fly in the ninth to account for the final Red Dragon run.
Serio would strikeout the side in the bottom of the eighth inning and made it four straight as he fanned the first hitter in the ninth. After hitting a batter, the righthander collected his sixth strikeout for the second out. A walk would put runners on first and second, however Serio induced a ground ball to end the game.
Jweid went the first 6 1/3 innings allowing a run and seven hits, striking out three and walking one. Junior righthander
JAIRO MENDEZ (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) allowed seven hits and three runs in 7 1/3 innings. Mendez fanned five and walked one.
