Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Upends No. 25 Rowan for the First Time Since 1980

Glassboro, NJ (3/24/07) – Senior attack BRIANNA GILLIN (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnamonson) had a hand in all but one goal as the Montclair State women's lacrosse team upended No. 25 Rowan University for the first time in 27 years with a 15-12 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Gillin scored six goals and assisted on career-best eight others as Montclair State recorded second straight win over a ranked opponent improving to 3-1 on the season. Gillin recorded a career high for points (14) and fell one shy of matchin Jeanelle Husth's record of 15 set against New Paltz in 1999.

Not since the first meeting between the in-state rivals in 1980 has Montclair posted a victory over Rowan. MSU defeated then Glassboro State, 15-6 in the first meeting between the teams and then suffered 13 consecutive losses over the next two-plus decades.

Gillin, who also had four draw controls in the game, scored three times and five assists in the first half as Montclair State trailed, 9-8 at the break. But the Red Hawks opened the second half with four straight goals to take their first lead of the game. Freshman MORGAN MACPHEE (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) tied the game six minutes in off an assist from Gillin, who then teammed with ANN DAILY (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) for the next two goals as MSU took an 11-9 lead with 13:18 to play. Gillin capped off the run with her fourth goals 38 seconds later to push the lead to three and after Rowan's Kelly Angstadt (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) scored, Gillin tallied two unassisted goals to push the MSU lead to 14-10 with seven minutes left.

Shana Smeriglio (Ocean, NJ/Ocean Township) got the Profs within 14-11 on a free position goal with 5:08 to play, but sophomore MARYKATE DIBENEDETTO (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) registered the final MSU goal - unassisted - with 3:55 left to seal the win for the Red Hawks.

Daioy finished with three goals while senior SHAUNA BROCKLEBANK (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) added two goals and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Kristin Kuhmann (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) made five saves as Montclair State outshot the Profs, 26-21 in the game.

Angstadt had five goals for Rowan (3-4), which also got two goals apiece from Smeriglio and Katie Kline (Collingswood, NJ/ Collingswood). Alicia Mannino (Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) made seven saves for the Profs.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, March 27 as they Red Hawks travel to Madison to face FDU-Florham in a 4:00 pm matchup. The game pits last year's two ECAC Regional winners as MSU captured the Upstate crown while the Devils took home the South championship.
