JACKIE FERRANTI (Bergenfield, NJ / Bergenfield) belted a grand slam in the second game while sophomore shortstop
JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ/Linden) had a two-run round-tripper in the opener as Montclair State swept a doubleheader from DeSales University at the MSU Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman first baseman
AMANDA LIVSEY (Congers, NY/Clarkstown North) had a solo home run for the Red Hawks took the first game 7-0 before capping off the sweep with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap. MSU has now won seven straight and upped its record to 11-2 this season.
Jennifer Cybularz ( Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) was 3-for-4 in the doubleheader for DeSales (4-4), which was playing its first contest in 17 days. The Bulldogs have been out of action since their 4-2 spring trip to Tuscon, Arizona. DSU defeated LaRoche, 3-2 in its last game on March 8.
In the opener, Montclair got all the runs it would need in the first inning on two swings of the bat as it cracked two home runs and scored three times. Ferranti led off the inning with a single, and after a pop out, Jimenez blasted her third home run of the year and 20 th of her career to give MSU a quick 2-0 lead. Livsey then stepped to the plate and made it back-to-back as she notched her first collegiate home run.
The Red Hawks tacked on a run in the second as Ferranti collected and RBI single and then added three more in the third. Consecutive two-out walks to
KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) and
WHITNEY DRIVER (Montville, NJ/Morristown-Beard) put runners on and both came around to score as
MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ/Triton) tripled to make the score 6-0. Shockley scored the final run on Ferranti's ground ball.
Junior righthander
CAROLYN MCCREA ( Wharton, NJ/Jefferson) picked up the victory as she upped her record to 8-1 with her third shutout of the season. McCrea allowed four hits, struck out four and walked one. Elise Wilk ( Philadelphia, PA/ Nazareth Academy) took the loss for the Bulldgos.
Ferranti, Jimenez and Shockley each had two hits for Montclair State.
In the second game, the Red Hawks scored five times in the bottom of the second to break a scoreless tie.
KELLY KARP (Edison, NJ/Edison) plated the first run with a single and the Red Hawks loaded the bases before Ferranti stepped up and connected for her third home run of the year and second career grand slam.
DeSales got a run back in the fourth as Cybularz singled, moved to second on a base hit and scored on a misplayed fielder's choice. Jimenez got the final run for Montclair on a ground out in the fifth inning.
Senior righthander
DANA WARNOCK ( Kearny, NJ/ Kearny) picked up the win to move to 3-1 on the season. Warnock allowed two hits, struck out five and walked three. Kerri Andrews ( Bethlehem, PA/ Bethlehem Catholic) suffered the loss to fall to 0-2.
Ferranti was 2-for-2 for MSU.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, March 27 as the Red Hawks host John Jay College at the MSU Softball Stadium. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3:00 pm.
