CAROLYN MCCREA ( Wharton, NJ/Jefferson) tossed the sixth perfect game in Montclair State history in the opener as the Red Hawks posted a pair of shutouts in a doubleheader sweep of John Jay College at the MSU Softball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Montclair won the first game 12-0 and took the nightcap 11-0 as it ran its winning streak to nine games while improving to 13-2 on the year. John Jay fell to 1-5 with the losses.
McCrea upped her record 9-1 on the season as she joined Dina DeAquino, Jackie Vitiello, Lois Fyfe, Crystal Sweeney and
ATHANASIA TOTARO as the only pitchers to toss a perfect game for Montclair State. McCrea struck out nine as she also collected her fourth shutout of the season.
The Red Hawks got all of the runs they would need in the first inning as
JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ/Linden) singled home
JACKIE FERRANTI (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) with the game's first run.
AMANDA LIVSEY (Congers, NY/Clarkstown North) followed with a two-run single to give MSU the three-run cushion. Montclair added another run in the second before busting the game open in the fourth with eight runs, sending 12 batters to the plate.
Livsey added two more RBI with a two-run double as she drove in four runs in the game. Senior catcher
MEGAN TANTUM (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) collected a two-run triple and sophomore
ASHLEY LUSTENBERGER (River Edge, NJ/River Dell) plated two more with a single to make the score 10-0. Lustenberger would come around to score on an error and
MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ/Triton) delivered the final run with a base hit.
Livsey, the NJAC Rookie Player of the Week, finished 1-for-2 with the four RBI and two runs scored while Jimenez and Tantum each had two hits and two runs batted in. Shockley and Ferranti also had two hits apiece as the Red Hawks registered 12 in the game.
In the second game, the MSU offensive onslaught continued with 10 runs in the first inning as Tantum brought home a run with an infield single and
KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) tripled with the bases loaded to make the score 4-0. Shockley had an RBI double and Livsey later added a two-run single before
KELLY KARP ( Edison, NJ/Edison) closed out the inning with a run-scoring base hit.
Senior righthander
DANA WARNOCK ( Kearny, NJ/ Kearny) picked up the win to move to 4-1 on the year. Warnock allowed a hit and struck out three before
ELIA PERSICO ( Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game.
Nance finished 2-for-2 as did Ferranti and Tantum as MSU had 11 hits. Arlene Pena ( Bronx, NY/Lehman) had the lone hit for the Bloodhounds, a two-out single in the second.
Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 29 as the Red Hawks close out their three-game homestand with a double-header against University of Scranton. First pitch at the MSU Softball Stadium is slated for 5:00 pm.
