Nance, Jimenez Propell Softball to Sweep of Scranton

Little Falls, NJ (3/29/07) – Freshman KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) belted a pair of home runs in the opener while sophomore shortstop JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ/Linden) added two-round trippers in the second game as Montclair State stretched its winning streak to 11 with a double-header sweep of University of Scranton at the MSU Softball Stadium on Thursday evening. The Red Hawks won the first game 6-1 and the second, 8-0.

Senior righthander DANA WARNOCK (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) tossed a no-hitter in nightcap as Montclair improved to 15-2 overall this season with its longest winning streak since capturing 11 in a row during the 2004 season.

Michelle Bochanski ( Washington Township, N.J./Paul VI ) had two hits and an RBI in the opener for Scranton, which fell to 0-4 on the year.

In the first game, MSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ/Triton) singled with one out and moved to second on a ground out before scoring on AMANDA LIVSEY's (Congers, NY/Clarkstown North) RBI single. Scranton would tie the game in the fourth on consecutive doubles by Mary Beth Vogel ( Havertown , Pa. /Cardinal O'Hara ) and Bochanski with two out.

Montclair State would regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Nance blasted her first-career home run to lead off the frame. The Red Hawks then put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior catcher MEGAN TANTUM ( Ewing, NJ/ Ewing) drove in the first run with a single and the final three came home as Nance, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate, connected on her second round-tripper in as many innings.

Junior righthander CAROLYN MCCREA ( Wharton, NJ/Jefferson) earned the victory as she improved to 10-1. McCrea allowed a run and five hits, struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Isabel Mendez ( Rutherford , N.J./Rutherford ) took the loss for the Royals, her first decision of the season (0-1).

Game number two was a similar start for MSU as it scored twice in the first courtesy of a two-run home run by Jimenez. Montclair got another run in the third on an RBI single by KELLY KARP (Edison, NJ/Edison) and scored three more in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Ferranti belted a two-run shot for her fourth home run of the year and 10 th career blast with Jimenez adding her second of the game two batters later. Jimenez now has five home runs this season and 22 in 63 career games for the Red Hawks.

Ferranti and MEGAN BRYSON ( Atco, NJ/Paul VI) accounted for the final two Red Hawk runs in the fifth as each collected an RBI single.

Warnock meanwhile tossed her second career no-hitter as she walked three and struck out three. The righthander also no-hit St. Joseph's (ME) in Florida in 2005 and is now 5-1. Kasey Borbidge ( Glenolden , Pa./ Springfield ) suffered the loss for Scranton.

Ferranti and Jimenez each had two hits for MSU.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, March 31. Montclair opens New Jersey Athletic Conference play by heading to Richard Stockton for a 1:00 pm doubleheader.
