JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ/Linden) belted her sixth home run of the year and drove in three runs in the nightcap while
CAROLYN MCCREA (Wharton, NJ/Jefferson) earned victories in both ends of the doubleheader as Montclair State stretched its winning streak to 13 with a sweep of Richard Stockton on Saturday afternoon.
MSU won 6-1 and 8-6 to improve to 17-2 overall this season and 2-0 in the NJAC. Montclair's winning streak is just two shy of the school record of 15 set during the 1999 season.
In the first game, Montclair jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as
JACKIE FERRANTI (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) singled to lead off the game and later scored as Tantum lofted a sacrifice fly.
KELLY KARP (Edison, NJ/Edison) added an RBI single in the third and MSU plated two more in the fifth as Tantum had an RBI single and
CORRINE GANNON (North Plainfield, NJ/Immaculata) scored on an error.
The Red Hawks would get one more run in the sixth on an RBI single by Jimenez before Tantum belted her 10th career homer and third of the season to lead off the seventh.
McCrea allowed five hits, struck out five and walked two allowing a run in the seventh inning to spoil the shutout. She improved to 11-1 on the year.
Jimenez, Karp and Tantum each had two hits for the Red Hawks.
In Game Two, Montclair trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the third when it errupted for five runs to take the lead for good. Jimenez got the Red Hawks going with an RBI dougle and Tantum tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single.
KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) drove ome the go-ahead run with a ground out and
CHERYL BODAK (South River, NJ/South River) completed the inning with a two-run single to give Montclair a 6-3 lead.
The Red Hawks extended the lead to 8-3 in the seventh as Jimenez connected on her sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot. It was Jimenez' 23rd career home run in just 65 games.
Richard Stockton would threaten in the bottom of the seventh scoring three times, however McCrea shut the door on a comeback as she fanned the final hitter, her sixth strikeout of the game. McCrea earned the win as she went the final four innings allowing five hits and walking just one as she upped her record to 12-1 on the year.
Ferranti and Jimenez each had three hits for MSU while
MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ/Triton) was 2-for-4.
The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday as they host Rutgers-Newark in an NJAC matchup at the MSU Softball Stadium beginning at 3:00 pm.
