Kings Point, NY (4/18/07) – Sean Doughtery ( Ellicott City, MD / Centennial) and Robert De Pol ( Riva, MD / St. Mary's) each scored three times and registered an assist as the United States Merchant Marine Academy picked up a key Skyline Conference victory with a 9-6 win over Montclair State in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening.
Brennan Dougherty ( Ellicott City , MD / Centennial) added two goals as the Mariners improved to 10-3 overall, 7-1 in the Skyline. The victory all but insures Kings Point of wrapping up the No. 2 seed and a first-round home game in the Skyline Conference Tournament which begins on Wednesday, April 25.
Sophomore attack A.J. Bachman (Montville , NJ / Mountain Lakes) had three goals for the Red Hawks, who had their seven-game winning streak snapped. MSU is now 8-4 overall, 6-2 in the Skyline and currently tied with Kean in the loss column for third place. MSU will face Kean in its final conference game on Monday, April 23 in Union .
Ryan Merritt put the Mariners on the board 1:35 into the contest, but Montclair countered with goals from
TYLER MEIXNER (Hamburg, NJ/Vernon) and Bachman for a 2-1 advantage with 8:48 to go in the opening period. De Pol tied the game two minutes later, but
TAYLOR BONNER scored an unassisted goal with 27 seconds left as MSU led 3-2 after the first.
In the second, De Pol got his second goal with 11:49 to play to knot the score at 3-3, but the Red Hawks would collect the final two goals of the period as
JOHN DELLA PESCA (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and Bachman each scored to give Montclair a 5-3 lead at the break.
Kings Point would take the game over in the third scoring all four goals as the Dougherty brothers figured in each score. Sean Dougherty notched the first, the second coming with 4:01 to go to tie the game at 5-5. Brennan Dougherty then put the Mariners in front for good 15 seconds later and Sean Dougherty tallied with 12 seconds left as USMMA built a 7-5 lead after three periods.
De Pol's second goal early in the second period extended the lead to 8-5 before Bachman netted his hat trick with 10:09 left to trim the lead to 8-6. But that would be as close as the Red Hawks would get as Brennan Dougherty finished off the game with the final goal.
John Pagano ( West Islip , NY /St. Anthony's) had 12 saves for Kings Point, which held a 39-34 advantage on shots.
THOMAS BOWERS ( Hamburg , NJ /Pope John XXIII) made eight stops for Montclair State , which won 13-of-15 faceoff in the game.
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, April 21 as they head to Radnor , PA to face Cabrini College in a non-conference matchup beginning at 7:00 pm .
